What are Postcodes?

Originally created by The Royal Mail and adopted in the UK between 1959 - 1974 to make postal delivery work more efficiently. Postcodes have evolved to form a crucial part of business planning and as an established reference point throughout the United Kingdom. A valid Postcode is formed using a series of letters and numbers of between 5 and 7 characters, this combination identifies an address or group of houses. A Postal code has two parts, an Outward and Inward code, separated by a space. Each full Postcode contains an average of 15 delivery points.

Postcodes operate at four levels. Take, for example, the Postcode SW18 1AZ

Level 1: Area

The UK is divided 124 postcode areas and each area is identified by the first two letters of the postcode (example SW). Each area has on average 183,000 delivery points.
